Liza and I met over a year ago in India and she has one of the purest souls of anyone I know. Living up in the Norwegian mountains, working as a yoga teacher and chef, she is kind and smart and understands life beyond her years.
I would like to tell you the truth about life: It will end.
Take a moment to acknowledge the feelings inside of you when you read it. Is it fear, anxiety or maybe anger? Even though I am the one writing it, I can hear my ego asking me how I could say such a horrible thing? "I don't want to think about that now!" it tells me.
But how could I not? Very recently my grandfather passed away from a heart attack and it left my grandmother in shock. Never could she have imagined living life alone. Grandpa took care of her, loved her, and every year on her birthday he put on their favourite song and they danced together on the living room floor, just like they did the first time they met. But if she had taken the time to understand that life ends, maybe she wouldn't have let it go a year between every dance?
So why wait for something tragic to happen to finally wake up?
I doesn't matter if you've had bad experiences in life, or if you are afraid of something in the future, because the memories or fears are not real. They are only thoughts. The reality is what you are doing right now. Whether it is going out with the trash, taking a shower or dancing 'til your body is full of sweat, that is what life is. Life does not have good or bad days, it does not have certain happenings that makes you happy or sad. You are the one creating that for yourself. You can choose to let go of the things you have no power over, and if you think carefully: what is it that you truly can control? If we can control our thoughts, we have the power of not letting them control us. The mind has a little life of its own, and if you take it too seriously it will take over. So whatever tragic thing that might have happened in the past, remember that it is in the past. Take a moment to sit with yourself, close your eyes and think about the event. Take a deep breath in, exhale and open your eyes.
What is real? Your thoughts or this moment? What happened to you is gone forever. It is now your choice to take whatever good you can out of it, and then let go of everything else...
When you come to the realization that everything has an end: your day at work, a warm bus ride, dinner with your parents/children or a night out with your friends you start to see the beauty in all of it. It is not only good or bad, but it is life itself. Don't let disagreements, fear, ego or restlessness take the moment away from you, because sooner than you know it will be over. The only thing that matters now is living it because we only have a finite amount of time.
Remember that if you are reading this, you are as much alive as anyone else in this world. Your biggest role model is filled with the same life as you. That means that you are the one who is capable of making your own dreams come true.
So, now when I you know the secret of life, don't you want go out there and live it?
